Tinnitus assessment and treatments
Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is the presence of sound such as buzzing ringing and humming. It can be triggered by a variety of causes, including a middle ear infection, earwax build-up, ‘glue ear’, and age-related hearing loss. Around 30% of adults will experience tinnitus at some point in their lives, with around 10% suffering from persistent tinnitus. That equates to around 360,000 Canadians living with chronic tinnitus.
Tinnitus can be associated with inner ear damage caused by repeated exposure to loud noises, usually work-related. It can also be triggered by Ménière’s disease, a condition that can cause hearing loss and induce vertigo (a spinning sensation).
Tinnitus and blood pressure
While not a direct cause of tinnitus, if you have high blood pressure, hypertension or high stress levels, your tinnitus may be more noticeable.
Professional, pain-free tinnitus and hearing assessments The Elgin Audiology team will assess your tinnitus and its likely cause, and help treat it accordingly. They can also advise you on ways to prevent ear damage or hearing loss, including earmolds, swim molds, and custom hearing protection, as well as hearing loss prevention programs. Talk to the team if you are exposed to high level of noise, from working with power tools to playing in a band, for specialist hearing protection solutions.
